Soapy, I salute you!

Sunday evening found us at the Magic Castle attending the annual commemorative Soapy Smith Wake and giving that legendary con man and bunco artist a warm send-off. πŸ˜‰ For a little bit of back ground, check out our previous post.

SoapySmith

Jefferson Randolph Smith, November 2, 1860 – July 8, 1898.

This event has been going on for roughly 13 years and we’ve attended on a fairly regular basis. It’s a lot of fun and there’s entertainment and gambling of all types using vintage gambling equipment (that alone is quite a treat to see). The proceeds from the event are for the Dai Vernon Foundation,Β 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to offering support, recognition, educational opportunities and financial aid during times of hardship to serious performers and students of the art of magic. The high point of the evening is when Jeff Smith, the great grandson of the legendary Jefferson Smith (aka “Soapy Smith”) leads a toast to Soapy’s spirit.

Below are just a few pictures from the evening:

And now she’s ready- all dressed up and ready to head off to Skagway and the Klondike. πŸ™‚

And now for the grand entrance…

Like a couple of cold-time con artists or politicians, here Jeff Smith, a descendant of the late departed Soapy Smith and yours truly share a moment of camaraderie. The vision going through my mind was two con artists trying to get the best of each other. πŸ˜‰

And here we are debating the legitimacy of an ore sample from one of Soapy Smith’s mines…

Should I be watching my wallet?

Check your watch chain, Mr. Smith…nothing is safe here!

It was a lot of fun being there and we definitely had a good time. It’s a pity that the event is held on a Sunday or we would have stayed a lot longer. Until next year, RIP Soapy!

A Toast To Soapy Smith

Jefferson Randolph Smith, November 2, 1860 – July 8, 1898.

Jefferson Randolph Smith, November 2, 1860 – July 8, 1898.

Last night we indulged in our yearly ritual of paying homage to the memory of the “Bad Man”Β Soapy Smith. Formally named Jefferson Randolph Smith II, Soapy was famous for as a confidence man specializing in just about every known form of bunco (and he made up some new ones too). Working his way through the West, Soapy built up one of the first true crime syndicates, first in Denver and later in Skagway.

Unfortunately for Soapy, he met his demise at the ripe age of 38when on July 8, 1898 when he was shot and killed in a confrontation with Frank Reid and a mob of vigilantes over allegations of having cheated John Douglas Stewart out of a sum of money.

Held yearly at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California, the event commemorates Soapy’s passing and gives the rest of us a chance to raise a glass and toast what was, no doubt, one of the American West’s most colorful characters (although if you were one of his victims, you might think differently). πŸ™‚

Here are some pictures of us:

Here we are watching the proceedings. unfortunately, yours truly managed to get sunburned earlier and it shows in the light.

Dress makeover complete! The three-quarter sleeves have been replaced by shorter ones.

We were not able to stay for long but what time we spent there was nice and we’re looking forward to next year already! πŸ™‚
