And We’re Doing It Again- Off To Bath For 2019

We had such a good time at the 2018 Prior Attire Victorian Ball in Bath, England that we’re doing it again in 2019! We’ve already secured out tickets and made reservations on Air New Zealand (highly recommended). Sponsored by Prior Attire, a reproduction garment maker in England, the ball is scheduled for May 5, 2019 and will be held at the Bath Assembly Rooms which is a fantastic venue for a ball. We will also be spending some time in London, touring museums and looking for fabrics (and anything else that strikes our fancy).

It promises to be an excellent time and we’re looking forward to being able to take the waters at Bath again (well, maybe we’ll settle for tea…) and of course we’ll be designing new  outfits- stay tuned for more! 🙂

Bridesmaid Dresses…

Bridesmaid dresses have been a staple of weddings for over 100 years and even today are a fixture for most weddings. For the typical wedding involving two or more bridesmaids, it is standard for the bridesmaids to be wearing dresses of a uniform style and color, thereby providing a canvas for the the bride to show brightly (after all, it is HER day… 🙂 ). However, the bridesmaid dress is often of a style that pleases nobody and in recent years there’s been a lot of resistance to the idea to the point where they’re being dispensed with for some.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th Centuries, wedding customs evolved and by the early 1900s, the typical wedding that we know today had taken form to include the distinct bridesmaid dress. Here are some examples:

Judging from the dress and hat styles, this was probably taken sometime around 1910 or so and what’s striking about it is that the bridesmaid dresses s are fairly uniform. While they appear to be of one style and made from the same material, there are variations in the trim on each woman’s skirt.

And here’s a few more from roughly the same time:

In this picture, the bride is almost indistinguishable from the bridesmaids except for the hat.

It’s an interesting to see that uniform bridesmaid dresses were a thing a hundred years ago. In future posts, we’ll look a little further back so stay tuned! 🙂

And We’re Back…

After a hectic weekend at No. 11, we’re back in LA catching up on things. Angus is happy that the long car ride is over and he’s rolling around on his Mid Century white shag carpeting. In the meantime, we’re getting organized for summer although the gloomy cool weather would seem to suggest otherwise… 🙂 Anyway, stay tuned for more in the near future!

Heading Home…

Time to load up the car and head home. In contrast to LA, it’s 95 degrees and very dry. Angus can hardly wait to get home- on several occasions, he eagerly tried to hop in the car thinking that we were heading home. Well, now we are… 🙂

Time For Some Eastlake Furniture…

Eastlake Furniture Couch Tombstone

Our Eastlake settee and chair were delivered from Mike R. Benjamin today…I had to bring him silk velvet, and to all of you who sew, you know how difficult it can be to work with. Now I really don’t want to go into town, I just want to stay here and sink into these. ♡

Yep, Angus approves…but he’s not trying to let on that he’s really enjoying it.
