Heading Home

It’s day four here at Clockwork Alchemy and things are beginning to wind down. We have one more presentation to give and then it’s time to load the truck, pack up the terrier peeps and head south for home. It’s been an extremely productive but busy four days for us and while we’re exhausted, we’re also pleased. We’ve met a lot of old friends who we haven’t seen in person in years (although the internet does allow constant contact) and that was nice- face-to-face is always preferable. We also had an opportunity to meet some new friends and we look forward to future meetings.

Overall, steampunk is a fascinating genre and it gives us another platform for design inspiration as well as a chance to interact with those with interest in the Victorian Era. We will definitely be returning next year, 🙂

The Fashion Show – Lily Absinthe At Clockwork Alchemy

After much hard work, staying up late many nights, and otherwise working out a host of logistical details both big and small, we’re happy to say that it’s all done and we are extremely happy! We presented two dresses, an evening dress and a day dress, both following an amethyst/violet color palette. Below are just a few pictures to whet the appetite, we’ll be providing a more detailed overview in future posts:

The evening dress on the left is our latest design, the “Lucy”, named after Lucy Westenra, the ill-fated companion of Mina Harker in Bram Stoker’s book Dracula and the subsequent Dracula movies. The dress on the right, the “Camille” is a lavender day dress in shades of lavender with amethyst accents. Both dresses are executed in the Mid-Bustle Era style (late 1870s/early 1880s) and represent some our most recent creations. In future posts, we’ll be providing more details so stay tuned. 🙂

Here are a couple of pictures taken post-show against a very interesting backdrop… 😉

And here are a couple of post-show views of the Lucy dress showing the train in all its glory:

And for a little post-show silliness…it’s been a long weekend. 🙂

Afterwards

We’ll be posting more details soon so stay tuned! 🙂

More On Day 3…

It’s been a busy morning between giving a presentation and socializing. 🙂 Due to a scheduling SNAFU, our hour-long How the West Was Worn presentation wound up being only a half-hour long so we ended up giving a very truncated version- frustrating, to say the least- C’est la vie.

Giving the presentation…

Well, we’ll be repeating the presentation tomorrow with an added “Wild Wild West” twist so stay tuned for more. 🙂

It’s been so busy that we haven’t been able to get many pictures of us but here’s one. 🙂

It’s been crazy busy here for us here at Clockwork Alchemy. Between presentations, meeting with clients, and getting ready for the fashion show, we’ve haven’t slowed down (much) and we’re getting by on way too little sleep and room service. The terrier peeps have been keeping us company and keeping our spirits up- they’ve been the most well-behaved dogs and have been acting as good-will ambassadors. We owe them big when we get home.

Terrier Peeps

On the presentation side, yesterday we presented Bygone Bijoux and we think it went pretty well although it was thinly attended because of the 5 pm time slot. The audience was mostly a younger crowd than we’re used to and I think we exposed some people to new possibilities in regard to using accessories and small details to really set off their costumes and communicate to others their impression- i.e., the look they’re trying to create. One thing we thought was interesting was that the younger crowd getting into costuming/living history/steampunk et al. are not as aware of the potential sources out there. For future presentations, we’ll prepare some sort of a hand-out on sources.

Taking a small break…

For costumes, things are moving into high gear as we prepare for the fashion show (which follows another presentation we’re doing). As with all new creations, there’s always various last-minute adjustments to be made along with some precision ironing to ensure that every pleat hangs just right.

Pleats

Pleating like a boss…in a hotel room… 🙂

We’ve brought the Altelier with us… 🙂

Room2

We even brought our portable vintage Singer 301 sewing machine- it goes with us everywhere to events, weddings, et al.

So here’s to another busy day- stay tuned!

We Made It! Lily Absinthe At Clockwork & After

We have arrived! After a five-hour drive, we finally made it to Clockwork Alchemy in San Jose. 🙂 After checking in and hauling in what seemed to be endless loads of luggage, we managed to settle in just long enough to catch our breath before changing our clothes and running off to give our first presentation. While we were off giving o ur presentation, Mac and Molly, our creative consultants, proceeded to make themselves comfortable…

Mac Approves!

Our first presentation was about Victorian fashions in general and we were filling for a presenter who had back out at the last-minute so we adapted our presentation How the West Was Worn: Victorian Fashions And The American West so our overview had a decidedly Western slant but hey, that’s how we roll. 🙂

Unfortunately, we were unable to secure any pictures but tomorrow promises to be an interesting one and we’ll be giving our presentation Bygone Bijoux: Victorian Accessories, which focuses on the use of accessories to help create that specific Victorian “look.

Well, it’s off to a long-awaited rest and we’ll have more for you all tomorrow! 🙂

The wonderful view from our room- well, we’re not here for the view. 😉

It’s morning now and the coffee is beginning to kick in. 🙂 It’s a bit stronger than usual since I naturally forgot to bring the creamer…

Today promises to be a busy on but we’re up for the challenge- our presentation is later today but we’ll be circulating about, meeting with many old friends that we have not seen in a long time (although the internet makes things easier) and no doubt, we’ll meet some new ones.

An interesting thought came to me yesterday while giving our Victorian fashion presentation- somebody asked us about the types of wool that were utilized on men’s coats. I have to admit, that I was so focused on explaining styles that it blindsided me- it was a technical question that I was not expecting and it only goes to show that sometimes your audience is not what you expect. After recovering and quickly reviewing my Introduction to Textiles class in my head, I managed to form a response that I hoped would address the audience member’s question. 🙂

However, it did get me thinking that perhaps the subject of Victorian Era textiles would make a good topic for a presentation. It would probably be a bit more technical that what we usually present but I think we’re up for challenge. One more thing to add to my list of future projects. 🙂 It only goes to show that sometimes inspiration comes at times we least expect it.

Well, on with the day and we’ll be checking in a bit later.
