It’s a rainy day of ruffles and buttonholes here with these ladies. 🙂

Lily Absinthe Goes To Banning
Today found us attending the Banning Stagecoach Days event in the town of Banning, California. Held every year on the second weekend in September, this community event features a rodeo, carnival rides, and a Wild West Show  sponsored by the Border Renegades. The Wild West Show portrays a slice of the Old West, consisting of a Wild West encampment where gunfighter shows are performed along with other living history activities to include a costume contest.
So what was it that brought two urban sophisticates out to the wilds of Banning? The costume contest, of course! We were asked by the organizers to reprise our roles as judges at the costume contest and naturally we agreed to help out; we also helped judge last year’s Stagecoach Days event and  we’d had a lot of fun doing it, in spite of a hail storm that forced us to carry on the contest inside of a large tent.
Although the temperature was in the low 90s, we spent a pleasant afternoon judging the contest from the shade of a large fly, fanned by a nice steady breeze. We were also treated by displays of daring-do by several gunfighter groups who made a special effort to put on their shows in spite of the heat and an overly-loud rodeo announcer that threatened to drown out their dialog.
In spite of the challenges, everyone had a good time and many people came home winners. In the case of the gunfight groups, there was even prize money and there were definitely some happy faces.
After the event, we retired to a local restaurant, Gramma’s Country Kitchen, for a relaxing late lunch to include fresh pie and ice cream (of course, I had Apple Pie, my favorite). Finally, we wish to thank our hosts/event organizers Bill and Ann Lamb and Rebecca Dougherty who invited us out to the event and went above and beyond to make it a pleasant experience. All in all, it was a nice outing and we look forward to coming back to Banning in the future.
Pleating The Night Away…
Hand finishing a foundation skirt on a Saturday Night in my work studio, watching “Napoleon Dynamite“, and unashamed of my nerdiness!
And For Some More Out Of Tombstone….
Today in Tombstone it was a bit warmer but that did not not deter us from going in to town and checking out the sights. Of course, we had a bit of a wardrobe change and today I decided to try pairing up my light green/putty-colored linen coat and vest with a pair of chocolate brown cotton corduroy riding breeches. Karin decided to try out her recently re-worked aqua-colored day dress made of a vintage silk blend with cotton ruffles.
The Lily Absinthe Rule: Never wear the same outfit two days in a row.
And because I couldn’t resist:
Naturally, we decided make another visit to the restored C.S. Fly Photography Gallery at the OK Corral and take some more portraits (got to love modern technology sometimes). We also spent some time talking to tourists and posing for pictures.
It was nice to see a lot of visitors in town; things have been slow to recover from the economic problems of 2008 – 2010 and every event weekend that attracts crowds is a good thing in our book. We look forward to returning in October 16-18, 2015 for Helldorado Days. In the meantime, stay turned for more! 🙂
Direct From Tombstone….
Labor Day weekend in Tombstone is always busy with visitors descending from all corners of the map and more so because of the Showdown in Tombstone event.  Of course this event is just too big to miss and Lily Absinthe was out. viewing the sights, meeting old friends, and making a few new friends.
The weather in Tombstone was extremely cooperative today, cooler than usual. No doubt the temperature was cooled down by the continuous rain the day before. In fact, the weather was so pleasant that we stayed in town for a lot longer than we had planned on.
Unfortunately, we arrived in town later than what we had planned on so we missed most of the Steampunk Costume Parade. However, from what little we saw, there were some very creative costumes which people put a lot of time in making. While Tombstone may seem to be a bit improbable as a backdrop for steampunk, bear in mind that one of the first television shows to combine elements of the western and the fantastical nature of steampunk was the Wild Wild West on the 1960s. 🙂
We then decided to make our usual stop at the OK Corral for some pictures. On this trip we only took some interior shots at the restored C.S. Fly Photography Gallery. Here are a few shots of us:
By this time it was getting late in the day so we decided to take a break, eating ice cream and people watching at Wyatt Earp’s Coffee House before catching a 6 pm show at Helldorado Town featuring the premiere of the group Western Icon Productions.
Overall it was a relaxing day and a bit of a vacation for the both of us. Stay tuned for more! 🙂
